6 Simple Ways to Update Your Living Room for Fall

White couch, throw pillows blanket and table styled with plants and decor.

We love the fall—and not just because the kids are back in school. The energy completely shifts this time of year with the cooler air and shorter days. You can’t help but want to get cozy and snuggle up on the couch. To us at Fleurish, there’s no better way to embrace the fall than changing up your surroundings with a little fall decor refresh.

Today, we’re giving you a sneak peek at a design that hits close to home: Selena’s mom’s house! You may have seen us drop a few hints about #projectthroughthewoods on our Instagram as we’ve slowly chipped away at this big renovation for the past few years. We’re not ready for a complete project reveal yet, but we’re excited to give you a glimpse into the living room changes we’ve made so far.

Like most of our designs, this space is light, bright, and airy, with simple white walls and neutral wood flooring. But when decorating for fall, we love to have a little fun adding layers of deep, rich hues that we don't normally select. And the best part is that fall decor is temporary—no big, scary design commitment whatsoever.

Check out the changes we made to turn up the fall feels in this clean, modern living room.

How to Give Your Living Room a Fall Decor Refresh

Updating your living room for fall doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. Here, we sourced all products from Amazon for a super affordable, quick refresh:

1. Throw pillows

Whereas summer throws are traditionally light blue, sandy beige, or crisp white, your fall throw pillows should lean a bit moodier: think greens, grays, and black. If you want an easy way to update your living room for the fall, start by trading in all the pastels and bright-colored throw pillows for earthier tones and heavier fabrics. Simply pack away your summer pillow covers in the linen closet, and pull them out again next year when the weather warms up.

2. Blankets

Who doesn’t want to snuggle up on the couch with a cup of tea when the weather is cold? Give your couch potatoes a comfy place to land with a heavy knit blanket or two. Patterns like this subtle plaid give a hint of interest without overwhelming the design. You can keep your blankets on the sofa for easy access or effortlessly toss them on a ladder that doubles as wall art.

3. Candles

Warm up your living room with a couple candles that set the mood. We love using tapers because they’re multi-purpose: you can move them around from the dining table to the fireplace mantel or even set them on the coffee table.

4. Dried florals

Fresh flowers are appropriate for spring and summer when you expect to see lush gardens and rolling hills. In fall, however, we suggest that you opt for dried florals, like pampas grass or bunny tails that tie in to the surrounding earthy decor. But of course, you can always keep your real, living greenery happy, healthy, and on display throughout the changing seasons.

5. Decor

When it comes to decor, go for natural materials, like the ones we displayed on the console and coffee tables, as much as possible. Earthy substances like wood, clay, and ceramic are always great options.

6. Rugs

If you want to take your fall refresh a step further, you can swap your rug for something darker or more textured. This may require some grunt work, a little storage space, and an agreeable partner, but it’ll make a big impact on your room if you’re up for the challenge! Here, we’ve included some affordable rugs options that are perfect for fall (links).
